Launched for the 1998 model year, the BMW M5 (E39) bridged the raw appeal of its E34 predecessor with a new standard of everyday usability—still widely praised as the purest M5 in the lineup’s 35-year history.
Generations
The E39 M5 followed the E34 M5 introduced in 1988 and was replaced in 2005 by the V10-powered E60 M5. It remained the only M5 to exclusively pair a naturally-aspirated V8 with a six-speed manual transmission until the F90/TU generation two decades later.
Design
BMW kept the regular 5-Series silhouette understated: only discreetly flared wheel arches, unique front and rear bumpers, and quad exhaust tips signaled the car’s performance intent. Inside, thicker sports seats with contrasting stitching and the driver-focused cockpit emphasized the dual character of luxury and track-ready.
Legacy
Critic reviews consistently rank the E39 M5 as the benchmark sports sedan of its era, held up by owners and enthusiasts for its balance of chassis poise, naturally-aspirated thrust and daily drivability.
