BMW M5 (E34)

The BMW M5 (E34) succeeded the first-ever M5 (E28) in mid-1988 and bridged the gap to the landmark E39. It brought super-sedan performance into a larger, more refined package while remaining hand-assembled at BMW M GmbH.
History
Launching in 1988 and remaining on sale until 1995, the E34 M5 arrived as the second generation of BMW’s high-performance saloon line. It ended production shortly before the E39 took over in 1995, marking a seven-year single-generation run.
Design
Compared with the boxier E28, the E34 flaunted smoother aerodynamics, subtle M-specific front and rear spoilers, and 17-inch “M-System” wheels with distinctive turbine covers. Inside, it retained four-door usability while adding power Recaro sports seats and a driver-focused cockpit.
Engineering
Every E34 M5 retained hand-built character: each S38 inline-six was individually assembled by two M GmbH technicians, a practice that began with its predecessor. Power rose steadily through two major updates, culminating in specs that underpinned the car’s reputation as one of the fastest four-doors of the early 1990s.
