Slotting in as BMW M’s first electrified model since the M1 supercar of 1978, the XM appeared for 2023 and redefines the brand’s approach to performance SUVs.
Development
Designed entirely in-house by BMW M, the XM pair taps a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 joined to an electric motor, delivering over 480 kW in initial trim. This plug-in hybrid architecture places a 29.5 kWh battery under the floor, yielding around 85–90 km of electric range under WLTP.
Dimensions & Styling
At 5.11 m long, 2.21 m wide mirrors-out, and 1.76 m tall, the XM is the first X-segment model to carry an upright coupe roofline, framed by stacked quad exhaust tips and illuminated kidney grilles. Curb weight is 2 749 kg, making it one of the heaviest BMW production vehicles.
Performance Variants
First out is the XM Label Red, claimed 0–100 km/h in 3.8 s with 550 kW system output. A forthcoming XM 50e is slated to lower power and price while retaining the PHEV layout.
Place in BMW M History
Beyond being the second BMW M car ever engineered from the ground up, the XM introduces M-specific electrification that will seed into upcoming X models, marking the division’s shift towards high-voltage performance.
