From October 2018, BMW began delivering its seventh-generation 3 Series, known internally as G20 (sedan) and G21 (wagon). Built on the CLAR cluster-architecture platform, this generation replaced the outgoing F30 and signals BMW’s intensified push toward weight-reduction, connectivity, and electrification in the compact-executive segment.
Design & Platform
The G20/G21 rides on the modular CLAR platform that mixes aluminum, high-strength steel, and magnesium. External dimensions edge slightly larger—length grows to 4,709 mm, width to 1,827 mm, and height settles at 1,435 mm—while torsional rigidity increases by 25 %. Sharper lines, enlarged kidney grilles, and new laser-matrix headlight options visually separate it from the F30.
Production & Model Updates
Series production began at BMW Plant Munich in October 2018. A mid-life refresh, commonly called the LCI, entered production in July 2022. Beyond cosmetic tweaks, the update brought enlarged displays running iDrive 8, revised engines with 48-V mild-hybrid assistance throughout the range, and new assisted-driving hardware.
Legacy & Market Position
As of 2024, the G20 remains the current benchmark for BMW’s core compact executive offering. Its platform will underpin the final full-combustion 3 Series before electrified successors arrive, making the G20 generation the bridge between BMW’s rear-drive heritage and its forthcoming Neue Klasse electric architecture.
