Introduced in 1984, the BMW M5 E28 turned the understated 5 Series into the world’s fastest production sedan of its day, establishing the blueprint for sports sedans that followed.
Birth of the first M5
Launched at the 1984 Amsterdam Auto Show, the M5 E28 began life as a skunk-works project: engineers shoehorned the M1 supercar’s 282 hp inline-six and close-ratio dog-leg gearbox into the sober E28 chassis. Production ran until 1988 at BMW Motorsport GmbH, with cars largely hand-finished to order.
Performance benchmarks
With 0–60 mph in 6.2–6.5 seconds and an unrestricted top speed of 248 km/h (154 mph), the M5 outran every contemporary four-door on the market. Four-piston front brakes, limited-slip differential, and recalibrated suspension delivered the distinct M signature of everyday usability mixed with supercar pace.
Development into the E34
As the naturally-aspirated sleeper sedan matured, it set the stage for its 1988 successor, the BMW M5 (E34), ushering in V8 power and electronics straight from motorsport.
