BMW E65

Launched for the 2002 model year, the BMW E65 (encompassing the E66 long-wheelbase) re-set the full-size executive sedan agenda and carried the BMW flagship until 2008.
History & Positioning
Introduced in 2001 as the successor to the E38, the E65 7 Series marked BMW’s most radical leap yet for its top sedan. It was replaced by the all-new F01/F02 generation that bowed in late 2008, ending a seven-year production run in which the car became both a technology showcase and a lightning rod for design controversy.
Design Language
Bangle-era styling broke sharply with past orthodoxy: a high boot line, pronounced creases along the flanks, and the then-revolutionary iDrive controller replacing most physical switchgear. At 1902 mm wide and 1491 mm tall, the E65 commands presence without matching the bulk of later flagships.
Engine Palette
The range spanned naturally aspirated and turbocharged straight-sixes, twin-cam V8s, and a smooth 6.0-litre V12 flagship. Early build sheets ventured from the 730i’s 3.0-litre inline-six to the 760i’s 438-hp twelve, with mid-life updates adding more torque and lower-emission diesels.
