From 2008 to 2015, BMW positioned the F01 and F02 7 Series as the flagship saloons that succeeded the polarising E65 generation, refining the brand’s upper-luxury offering for global markets.
Range Overview
BMW split the fifth-generation 7 Series into two distinct wheelbases: the F01 short-wheelbase and the stretched F02 long-wheelbase, both sharing the same architecture. Width is set at 1 902 mm and roof height at 1 479 mm, giving the line a broad, low stance that placed it squarely against the Mercedes S-Class and Audi A8.
Market Context & Timing
Launched during the 2008 model year, the F01 replaced the E65 after the latter’s eight-year run. Its introduction marked BMW’s response to criticism of the previous generation’s iDrive and exterior styling, delivering sharper lines inside and out while keeping core technology such as the V-12 flagship and rear-wheel steering.
Succession
Production ended in 2015, handing the torch to the lighter, aluminium-intensive G11/G12 generation. Even so, the F01/F02 set design, powertrain and technology templates that influenced later BMW luxury sedans.
