BMW E32

Debuting at a time when cassette players still reigned and global competition for the flagship luxury segment was fierce, the BMW E32 (1986–1994) stepped in as the second-generation 7 Series. By marrying a fresh straight-six lineup to the first German post-war V12, it set fresh benchmarks for technology and refinement.
History
Launched in model-year 1986, the E32 replaced the E23 family and remained in production for eight years, ultimately ceding its place to the E38. Until 1992 purchasers could choose six- or twelve-cylinder power alone; the mid-life 1992 update widened the catalog to include BMW’s new M60 V8 in the 730i and 740i.
Engineering Highlights
Constructed on a 1845 mm wide steel unibody, the E32 was among the earliest series cars to deploy electronically controlled automatic transmissions, traction control (ASC), dual-zone climate systems and integrated car phones. The 5.0-liter M70 V12 twin-ECU powertrain produced 295 hp and remained the flagship engine until the V8s arrived.
Design
Designer Claus Luthe kept the classic three-box profile but stretched the wheelbase, lowered the ride height and softened the edges of the E23 to signal a leap in luxury. Narrow chrome strips, frameless door glass and integrated bumpers marked the understated executive look that defined BMW until the 1990s.
Generations & Variants
Two wheelbase lengths were offered from launch: the standard E32 and the L long-wheelbase. At introduction the range ran 730i/735i and the twelve-cylinder 750i/750iL. After 1992 the newly available V8-powered 730i and 740i versions augmented the portfolio while earlier models continued to sell alongside.
