Introduced as the third generation in 2019, the BMW 1 Series (F40) shifted from rear-wheel to front-wheel drive, reinventing the brand’s smallest model for the first time since its 2004 debut.
The Drive-Layout Break
BMW’s long-standing rear-driven formula for the compact segment ended with the F40. By mounting the engine transversely and routing power to the front wheels, the company freed interior space and simplified packaging, mirroring the move seen in the X1 and X2 crossovers.
Platform & Dimensions
Built on BMW’s UKL2 modular architecture, the five-door hatch measures 4319 mm long, 1799 mm wide and 1434 mm tall, yet weighs a relatively light 1320 kg. Extra width over the outgoing F20 was offset by the shorter bonnet, compensating for the heavier transaxle layout.
Generations
The F40 replaced the F20/F21 twins and marked the point where the 1 Series family split: only the five-door variant continued, while the coupé and cabrio successor adopted the new 2 Series designation. The forthcoming F70 shown for 2025 will once again adopt the 1 Series badge, tightening the product cycle.
