For 1961, Lotus rolled out the Lotus 20, the fresh successor to the Lotus 18 in the rapidly expanding Formula Junior ranks aimed at feeding new talent into grand prix racing.

Like its predecessor, the 20 was engineered specifically for the global Formula Junior category, a budget-minded series that prepared drivers for Formula 1. Designed within strict cubic-centimetre and cost caps, the car had to balance affordability with outright performance.
