Built in a single production batch at Lotus’ Hethel factory, the 340R is a stripped-down, track-focused derivative of the Series 1 Elise that Lotus delivered in the year 2000.
Origins and Production
Lotus announced the 340R midway through 2000 as a strictly limited run, designing it directly from the first-generation Lotus Elise platform. All cars rolled off the Hethel assembly line that same year, and no second series has followed, making the model a one-time, collector-focused experiment.
Design Philosophy
True to the Lotus ethos of added speed through reduced weight, the 340R dispenses with doors, roof, and windshield, exposing both passengers and mechanicals to the elements. The bare aluminum tub and cycle-style wings give the car an insect-like silhouette that instantly marks it out from any production Elise.
Legacy
Today the 340R remains one of the scarcest road-legal derivatives in the modern Lotus lineup, showing up at track days and specialist auctions rather than public roads. Its no-compromises layout serves as a reference point for later lightweight specials such as the 2-Eleven and 3-Eleven.
