Honda Torneo

Built between 1997 and 2002, the Honda Torneo stepped in as a sportier, slightly upscale replacement for the Rafaga and shared its platform with the concurrent sixth-generation Accord. Positioned in a niche that sat above family sedans but below dedicated luxury cars, it became a clear preview of the styling and mechanical advances that would migrate wholesale into the Accord line.
Design and market role
With sharper lines, projector-style headlights and a distinct honeycomb grille, the Torneo introduced a noticeably more aggressive face than the Rafaga it replaced. A cashmere-grade fabric interior, six-disc in-dash changer and full-color instrumentation were aimed squarely at Japanese buyers who wanted Accord practicality wrapped in European flair.
Generations to Accord transition
Offered only as one four-glass-window generation in two body styles—the standard saloon and sportier Euro S—the Torneo never gained a second iteration. A 2002 facelift with white multi-reflector clusters and updated alloy patterns marked the final chapter; by mid-2002 production was rolled into the seventh-generation Accord, squeezing the standalone Torneo nameplate out of the catalog.
Legacy
Later Accord buyers found the Torneo’s direct-injection H22A VTEC and five-speed automatic carried forward almost unchanged, while the model’s tight handling balance and upscale blend of trim tiers continues to influence Honda’s Japanese domestic marketing to this day.
