Replacing the FK8 in 2022 and still on sale today, the Honda Civic Type R FL5 ushers the Type R into its sixth generation with sharper proportions and more sophisticated packaging while retaining the hot-hatch formula that propelled it to global acclaim.
Design evolution
The FL5 grows to 4 595 mm in length and 1 890 mm in width, a modest but telling increase over the previous FK8. Its slightly lower 1 405 mm roof and tauter surfacing mark a move away from the last gen’s over-styled aggression toward cleaner lines, improved aero integration, and mature road presence accented by the signature red Honda badge and triple-outlet centre exhaust.
Generations
Introduced in 2022 as the sixth iteration, the FL5 continues the Type R lineage that began with the 1997 EK9 hatch. It is the second Civic Type R sold worldwide (after the FK8) and the first built on Honda’s current global Civic platform.
