From 1985 to 2006—and revived in 2021—the Honda Integra served as the sport-oriented sibling to the Civic, defining Honda’s premium compact offering in markets from Tokyo to Chicago.
Heritage
Honda created the Integra to replace the Quint (sold abroad as the Rover Quintet) as a more luxurious alternative to the mainstream Civic. Across four generations the coupe and liftback earned a reputation for rev-happy VTEC engines and precise front-wheel-drive handling. When Honda introduced its North-American luxury brand Acura for the 1986 model year, the Integra was one of the two debut products alongside the flagship Legend.
Performance Legacy
While every Integra placed the driver close to a willing four-cylinder and slick manual gearbox, the 1995–2001 Type R distilled the formula into a 195-hp track scalpel with limited-slip differential, razor-sharp suspension, and chassis-stripping weight reduction. Autocar, Car and Driver and countless enthusiasts continue to cite it as a benchmark front-wheel-drive performance car.
Modern Revival
After an absence of fifteen years, the Integra nameplate returned for 2021 as a five-door liftback based on the 11th-generation Civic platform. Sold only under the Acura brand in North America, the new model offers both a 1.5-liter turbo and the 200-hp Type S to reconnect the badge with buyers who still swear by its 1990s predecessor.
