From 1987 through 1991, Honda rolled out its fourth-generation Civic, a sharper, lighter redesign that cemented the model’s reputation for precision engineering and frugal running costs.
Design
Engineers trimmed 40 mm of height compared with the outgoing car, dropping the roof line to 1 335 mm for improved aerodynamics. Flush glass, a sleeker nose and a stiffer unibody gave the fourth-gen Civic a more grown-up silhouette while keeping its compact footprint.
Performance
Across its four-year run, buyers could choose from a range of fuel-efficient inline-four engines paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic. Weight reductions and revised suspension geometry delivered sharper handling without sacrificing the ride comfort that daily drivers expected.
Legacy
The 1987-1991 Civic introduced Honda’s growing global audience to high-revving VTEC technology in later performance trims and proved that affordable front-wheel-drive cars could still be genuinely fun to drive. Its clean mechanical package became a favorite among tuners, laying the groundwork for the sport-compact culture that exploded in the 1990s.
