From 1972 to 1976, the Continental Mark IV defined American personal luxury. Bigger than the Mark III it replaced and looming over almost all domestic rivals, this third-generation coupe was Lincoln’s bid to unseat the Cadillac Eldorado.
Design & Dimensions
Measuring 2 025 mm wide and 1 350 mm tall, the Mark IV carried a generous 2 630 kg of heft—visual shorthand for its opulent ride and vault-like presence. Crisp long-hood/short-deck proportions carried over from the Mark III, but extra length and flared fenders emphasized road presence and passenger comfort.
Generations & Rivals
Graduating from the well-received Continental Mark III, the Mark IV stood as the third distinct generation of Lincoln’s personal-luxury lineage. After 1976 it gave way to the sleeker Mark V. Throughout its run, the only real rival was the Cadillac Eldorado; no other American marque offered a two-door of such scale and status.
Market Impact
By outsizing its predecessor and pinning itself against the Eldorado alone, the Mark IV reinforced Lincoln’s image as a showcase of technology and tradition. The car became a fixture in upscale suburbs and board-room parking lots, cementing Ford’s place at the top tier of domestic luxury coupes amid tightening 1970s emissions rules.
