The Ford XE Falcon marked Ford Australia's mid-1980s overhaul of its full-size family car, rolling off the line from 1982 to 1984 as the direct successor to the XD Falcon and the immediate predecessor to the facelifted XF series.
Production & Positioning
Built exclusively in Australia, the XE represented the second year-cycle refresh of the fourth-generation Falcon range. Alongside the workaday Falcon sedans, wagons and utes sat the Ford Fairmont XE—an up-spec trim line bringing velour upholstery, extra chrome and more sound-deadening to broaden appeal in the competitive local large-car market.
Dimensions & Styling
At 1860 mm across and standing 1374 mm high, the XE sat lower and wider than many contemporaries, aiding planted high-speed stability. Blockier, squarer lines replaced the soft curves of the XD, featuring larger glass areas for improved visibility and subtly extended rear overhangs that contributed to smoother proportions in both sedan and wagon forms.
Technical Heritage & Legacy
Engineering under the sharper sheetmetal carried over largely from XD, meaning familiar six- and eight-cylinder engines and rear-wheel drive. Despite its short two-year lifespan, the XE bridged crucial environmental requirements, later underpinning the more aerodynamic XF Falcon. Today, clean Fairmont examples and six-packs are sought after by Australian enthusiasts preserving the last of the boxy Falcons.
