Ford XD Falcon

From 1979 to 1982 Ford Australia rolled out the XD Falcon, the opener of the Falcon’s fourth generation and a clean-sheet replacement for the XC. Significantly, the boxy new sedan also marked the transition of the Fairmont badge from trim level to fully-fledged luxury parallel range.
Design & Dimensions
The XD shelved the rounded lines of its predecessor for a crisper, more rectilinear silhouette that reflected early-80s design tastes. With a width of 1 860 mm and a height of just 1 374 mm it sat lower and wider, giving it a planted stance by the standards of the day.
Range & Positioning
Sold alongside the mainstream Falcon, the Fairmont (XD) introduced higher-grade upholstery, sound deadening and convenience features, carving out a distinct luxury tier within the same body. Together, the Falcon XD and Fairmont XD restarted the model cycle that would later evolve into the XE in 1982.
Legacy
Though built only from 1979 to 1982, the XD’s sharper styling language foreshadowed the angular look of Ford Australia throughout much of the 1980s. Its mechanical foundation and trim structure served as the basis for the longer-lived XE and helped cement the Falcon/Fairmont twin-model strategy that continued for decades.
