Launched in 1973, the Ford XB Falcon took over from the XA and became the mid-cycle refresh of Ford Australia’s third-generation family sedan and coupe range before bowing out to the XC in 1976.
History
Produced from 1973 to 1976, the XB represented a subtle yet important evolution of the XA Falcon. Engineers focused on refining drivetrain reliability and cabin comfort, while stylists introduced a cleaner grille and revised bumpers that distinguished it from the XA’s chunkier lines.
Design
Measuring 1,900 mm wide and 1,369 mm tall, the XB retained the broad-shouldered stance of its predecessor. Shared body shells underpinned both the mainstream XB Falcon and the up-market Ford Fairmont (XB), the latter adding wood-grain trim, extra sound deadening, and higher-grade upholstery.
Legacy
Today the XB is remembered for its brief but influential three-year production window, bridging the aggressive XA and the downsized XC eras. Clean, unaltered examples—especially Fairmont sedans and hardtops—are increasingly sought by collectors tracking Australia’s locally built muscle lineage.
