Ford XA Falcon

Ford’s 1972-1973 XA Falcon marked the start of the third generation of its Australian-made large car range, bringing new sheet-metal and a more upscale Fairmont spin-off to the market during a time of tightening design rules and shifting tastes Down Under.
History & Arrival
Conceived during 1970–71, the XA Falcon entered production in 1972 to replace the XY Falcon, with the entire body and chassis package redesigned locally at Ford Australia’s Broadmeadows and Geelong facilities. It was the first wholly Australian-styled Falcon since the introduction of the US-influenced first generation, reflecting a deliberate shift toward a uniquely antipodean aesthetic and structural package.
Design & Dimensions
The XA’s family resemblance to earlier Falcons remained, but smoother lines, a wider 1 900 mm track and a lower 1 369 mm roofline gave the range a squatter, more muscular stance. The Fairmont (XA) variants added bright metal trim, distinctive grilles, plusher upholstery and extra sound-proofing, blurring the line between family sedan and entry-level luxury.
Platform & Spin-offs
Engineers used the new XA platform for more than mainstream sedans: the range-topping Ford Landau coupe adopted the same floorpan with unique rear-quarter panels and extended rear overhang. Years later, ongoing panel sharing between XA and subsequent XB and XC facelifts ensured widespread parts availability and easy customization—factors that have sustained today’s classic-car scene.
