Launched in 1984 as the replacement for the Fairmont, the Ford Tempo became Ford’s volume-selling compact car in the United States and, despite its successor the Contour arriving in the mid-1990s, the nameplate has remained in limited production to the present day.
History
Ford introduced the Tempo for the 1984 model year to modernize its compact lineup and retire the Fairmont platform. It was offered in two-door and four-door configurations and quickly became one of Ford’s best-selling cars through the late 1980s. Official production for the U.S. market wound down with the launch of the Ford Contour in 1995, yet the Tempo nameplate has continued in low-volume regional markets, explaining its "1984–present" factory status.
Design & Engineering
The Tempo rode on Ford’s new CE14 platform, notable for its aerodynamic flush glass and integrated body-colored bumpers that were advanced for mass-market compacts in 1984. Front-wheel drive and a fully independent rear suspension (on later models) aimed to improve fuel efficiency and ride comfort, while engines ranged from 2.0-liter inline-fours to optional 3.0-liter V6s in performance-oriented trims.
Legacy
Despite modest enthusiast appeal, the Tempo’s high sales figures helped Ford weather the mid-1980s fuel-crisis hangover and taught the company valuable lessons in platform commonality that informed later global models. Today, surviving examples are unremarkable classics—more noteworthy as period sales leaders than as collectibles—and the lineage directly paved the way for Ford’s mid-1990s world-car strategy embodied by the Contour.
