Built 1978–1983, the Ford Fairmont replaced the Maverick and became Ford’s first North-American compact to ride on the all-new Fox platform, kicking off a chassis family that would underpin fifteen years of Fords, Lincolns and Mercurys.
Engineering & Platform
Under its boxy shell, the Fairmont debuted Ford’s rear-wheel-drive Fox platform, a lightweight unibody architecture engineered for four-, six- and eight-cylinder engines. Track width was set at 1 803 mm, giving the car a footprint roughly matching contemporary intermediates while weighing substantially less—an advantage in fuel-conscious late-1970s America.
Body Styles & Grades
Unlike the Maverick’s two-door-only line-up, Fairmont buyers could choose a two-door notchback sedan, two-door coupe, four-door sedan, or a five-door station wagon. Entry-level trim retained the Fairmont badge, while an up-market Futura package added tape stripes, bucket seats and a slant-back roof on the coupe.
Successor & Legacy
After the 1983 model year, Ford handed the compact reins to the front-wheel-drive Ford Tempo, but the Fox platform lived on under everything from the Mustang SVO to the Lincoln Continental. The Fairmont itself quietly seeded decades of enthusiast projects, its roomy engine bay and rear-drive layout making it a donor-car favorite for V8 swaps.
Related Models
Lincoln-Mercury’s Mercury Zephyr was the Fairmont’s near-twin, differing mainly in grille, lighting and upholstery. Down the line, the Fairmont also spawned the Futura coupe and the more luxurious Ford Granada, reinforcing Ford’s move to modular, platform-based manufacturing.
