The sixth-generation Ford Mustang, known internally as the S550 chassis, rolled off the line for the 2015 model year and finished its run in the summer of 2023, bridging Ford’s pony car into the modern performance era.
History and Timeline
Arriving as a complete redesign released in late 2014 for the 2015 model year, the S550 Mustang finally ditched the old solid-axle rear in favor of an independent rear suspension and introduced turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder power alongside familiar V-6 and V-8 options. A 2018 mid-cycle facelift added a 10-speed automatic, refreshed styling, and the 460 hp GT Performance Pack Level 2. Production ran through 2023, after which the seventh-generation (S650) Mustang took over.
Design and Engineering
Ford widened the track by nearly two inches front and rear while lowering the roofline, giving the S550 a more planted stance without sacrificing the fastback/Mach 1 heritage. The switch to an all-new aluminium-intensive platform cut weight and sharpened handling, while selectable drive modes and optional MagneRide dampers kept the pony car civil on the commute and fierce on the track.
Engine Range
At launch, the 3.7 L V-6 made 300 hp, the new 2.3 L EcoBoost turbo-four punched out 310 hp, and the 5.0 L 'Coyote' V-8 cranked 435 hp. By 2018 Ford axed the V-6, bumped the 2.3 L to 330 hp and the Coyote to 460 hp. Shelby variants, including the GT350 and GT500, pushed output from 526 hp up to a supercharged 760 hp before the generation ended.
