From late 1993 through 2004, Ford sold the fourth-generation Mustang—the first thorough reboot the pony car had seen since 1979. Distinctly 1990s yet sprinkled with first-gen cues, the SN95 platform carried the Mustang flame into the new millennium.
History
Introduced on December 9, 1993 as a 1994 model, the SN95 Mustang stepped away from the 1979-93 Fox design after a 15-year run. It culled the previous trio of notchback, hatchback, and convertible, offering just a 2-door coupe plus the re-introduced soft-top in a cleaner line-up.
Design
Bud Magaldi’s exterior blended aerodynamics with retro touches—tri-bar tail-lamps, side scoops, and a long hood/short deck that echoed the 1965 original. Beneath the fresh skin sat the venerable Fox platform, heavily revised with a wider track, modern suspension tuning, and a cohesive 1990s look.
Performance evolution
Fourth-gen launch engines ranged from the 3.8 L Essex V6 to the carry-over 5.0 L small-block V8, replaced mid-cycle by the 4.6 L modular V8. The 2003-04 SVT Cobra capped the series with a supercharged 4.6 putting out 390 hp and an independent rear suspension—first for a regular-production Mustang.
Legacy
Mustang IV marked the last time the Fox architecture appeared under a Ford car. It bridged the muscle-car nostalgia boom of the early 1990s with the tech-forward performance that the 2005 fifth-generation would perfect, closing one era while teaching Ford what a modern Mustang could be.
