Origins & Lifespan
The Fox-body Mustang arrived for 1979 riding on Ford’s flexible, cost-saving Fox platform. Over 14 model years it gained incremental updates to powertrains, aerodynamics, and interior refinement, bridging the gap between the muscle heyday and modern sports-car sensibilities. Production wrapped only in late 1993, making way for the fourth-gen SN-95.
Model & Trim Evolution
Throughout its run the range expanded from a basic 2.3-liter four-cylinder notchback to the turbocharged SVO and the revived 5.0-liter GT/Cobra twins. Special editions like the 1982 GT (first 5.0 HO V8 since 1973 Bullitt) and 50-inch-winged SVO (1984-86) carved a niche for performance buyers while keeping gas-strapped owners satisfied.
Rear-Wheel Drive Rescue
When Ford explored swapping the Mustang to a front-wheel-drive Mazda platform for the 1980s, enthusiast backlash and an internal strategy pivot rescued the RWD layout. The intended FWD car was rebadged as the Ford Probe, while project SN-95 green-lit a thoroughly redesigned rear-drive successor.
