Early history & launch
Henry Ford founded Ford Motor Company on June 16 1903 and the first Model A was delivered to Chicago dentist Ernest Pfennig exactly five weeks later, on July 23. Production took place at the Ford Mack Avenue Plant, a small wood-frame building on Detroit’s East Side—the firm’s first factory and the birthplace of Ford’s serial manufacturing methods.
Design & engineering
Weighing only 567 kg, the two-seat Model A mounted a flat-twin engine under a simple hood and drove the rear wheels through a two-speed planetary transmission plus reverse. A tiller controlled steering, and mechanical brakes on the rear wheels provided stopping power. Top speed was 48 km/h—lively for 1903 standards—making the Model A practical for both city jaunts and rudimentary country roads.
Sales, figures & succession
Production ran through 1903 and 1904, with a total of 1,750 cars built before Ford introduced the improved Model C mid-1904. Despite only a brief market life, the small output sold quickly; at US$850 for the two-seat runabout and US$900 for the four-seat tonneau, Ford’s pricing undercut several rivals. The Model A was gradually phased out once the Model C took over, closing the first chapter of Ford’s mass-production story.
