Produced from 1980 to 1991, the Ford LTD Crown Victoria was Ford’s range-topping full-size sedan, coupe, and wagon, positioned above the core LTD lineup and aligned against the Mercury Grand Marquis.
Origin & Positioning
The LTD Crown Victoria emerged as the premium branch of the LTD family for the 1980 model year, reviving a nameplate first seen on the chrome-roofed 1955–1956 Ford Fairlane. Ford positioned it as the flagship of the full-size range, slotting just ahead of the standard LTD in price and trim.
Body Styles & Layout
Three configurations were offered: two-door sedan, four-door sedan, and five-door station wagon. Built on Ford’s rear-drive Panther platform, the cars shared much with the Mercury Grand Marquis but wore unique grille work and rectangular headlamps that set them apart on dealership lots.
Downsizing to a New Identity
For 1992 Ford dropped the LTD prefix entirely. The model continued unchanged under the simpler Crown Victoria name, marking the end of the LTD Crown Victoria as a distinct trim level and beginning the long-running Crown Victoria line that would soldier on for police and taxi fleets into the 2010s.
