Ford LTD

Ford introduced the LTD name in 1965 as a premium trim atop the Galaxie line; by 1967 it was spun off as its own model range. Positioned against the Chevrolet Caprice, the LTD pointed buyers toward upscale upholstery, sound deadening, and convenience features traditionally reserved for Mercury in order to increase Ford’s share of the profitable full-size market.

Six distinct generations rolled out between 1965 and 1986. The 1965-68 cars rode on a full-length perimeter frame, growing in 1969-78 to the largest footprint Ford ever offered in North America. Downsizing in 1979-86 trimmed weight and improved fuel economy without sacrificing passenger space, creating the squared-off profile that would evolve into the final 1992 LTD Crown Victoria.

With Mercury counterparts such as the Marquis (from 1967), the LTD occupied the fertile middle ground: more lavish than the Galaxie, less expensive than a Lincoln. Fleet and police sales were strong, and by the late-1970s the LTD was the best-selling full-size Ford, often ordered with optional 351- and 400-cubic-inch V8 engines.

After 1986 the platform and structure continued under the LTD Crown Victoria, keeping the doors open to taxi fleets and police departments well into the 1990s. The LTD nameplate itself quietly exited U.S. showrooms after 1986, closing a 21-year chapter that defined Ford’s big-car strategy for a generation of buyers.
