Between 1991 and 1993, Ford Australia rolled out the EB-series Falcon as the direct follow-up to the much-criticised EA, rebooting its large-car lineup just as the Holden Commodore VP arrived. It served as the fifth generation’s second iteration and main luxury spin-off in Australia, cementing itself before the mildly revised ED took over.
History
The Ford EB Falcon arrived hot on the heels of the EA, aiming to correct build-quality and reliability concerns that had dented Ford Australia’s reputation. Introduced in 1991 and running until 1993, it marked a strategic mid-cycle refresh designed to claw back buyers and respond decisively to the brand-new Holden Commodore VP.
Design & Variants
Built on the same enlarged EA platform, the EB paired subtly re-sculpted bodywork with a sharper front clip and revised tail-lights, signalling a cleaner, more cohesive visual identity. Alongside the mainstream Falcon, the Fairmont EB appealed to upscale shoppers, adding more brightwork, extra sound deadening and higher-grade upholstery inside an otherwise identical shell.
Legacy
Though brief, the EB Falcon helped restore customer confidence and set the template for Ford’s rapid-response refreshes during the early-1990s sedan wars. Its improved fit-and-finish benchmark allowed the later ED and EF models to solidify the Falcon as a perennial Commodore rival well into the decade.
