Ford Australia replaced the well-received EL Falcon with the radically restyled AU Falcon in 1998. Sold until 2002, the car polarised buyers and critics yet spawned Fairmont luxury derivatives and high-performance TE50 and TS50 variants.
Market arrival and early reception
The AU Falcon arrived in Australian showrooms in September 1998 as the sixth generation of Ford’s locally engineered large sedan range. Its controversial oval-dominated styling, combined with an early build-quality dip, gave the model one of the toughest launches in local motoring history.
Variants and lineup
Alongside standard sedan and wagon AU Falcons, Ford offered the Fairmont prestige range with chrome detailing and additional safety kit. Enthusiasts could choose the TE50 with its Windsor-derived 5.0-litre V8, the harder-core TS50 based on the Fairmont Ghia shell, or the short-lived FTE T-series that capped the family.
Short generation, enduring impact
Production ended in 2002 after barely four model years, handing the baton to the altogether more successful BA Falcon. Yet the AU’s mechanical package—its independent rear suspension and modular architecture—provided the mechanical underpinnings for Australia’s next decade of rear-drive Falcons and Territory SUVs.
