Ferrari F1/86

Debuting in the 1986 Formula One World Championship, the Ferrari F1/86 was Scuderia Ferrari’s challenger designed by Harvey Postlethwaite. Despite carrying one of the grid’s most powerful engines, it failed to deliver results and was quickly superseded.
Design & Engineering
Harvey Postlethwaite created an all-new chassis to replace the 156/85, yet the F1/86 could not translate the reputed muscle of its turbo V6 into overall lap time. The car struggled with chassis balance and aerodynamic efficiency, leaving its engine’s strength largely untapped.
1986 Season & Drivers
Michele Alboreto and Stefan Johansson piloted the scarlet machine through 16 championship rounds. Between them, they scraped only 13 points—sole podium courtesy of Johansson in Austria—and the team slumped to fourth in the Constructors’ standings.
Legacy
The uncompetitive season forced Ferrari back to the drawing board. Lessons learned pushed Postlethwaite toward the F1/87, a car that swiftly re-established the Scuderia as front-runners the following year.
