Introduced in 1967, the mid-engined Dino 206 GT opened a new era for Ferrari when it became the first production model to carry the Dino sub-marque, showcasing V6 power and pioneering layout for the brand.
Genesis and Marque
Ferrari developed the Dino line to homologate a V6 engine for Formula 2 racing, naming it after Alfredo "Dino" Ferrari. The 206 GT debuted this badge in 1967, sold purely as a Dino rather than a Ferrari, laying the groundwork for the successful 246 GT/GTS series that followed.
Engineering Breakthrough
The car’s transverse 2.0-litre V6 was mounted amidships, an architectural departure for Ferrari road cars that prioritised balance and agility. This mid-engine layout became the template for later Ferrari sports cars, directly influencing the 308 that replaced the range in 1974.
Design Language
Styled by Pininfarina and built by Scaglietti, the 206 GT combined a low, flowing silhouette with a compact cabin stretched over thoroughly modern proportions. The result was an elegant yet purposeful shape that subtly announced Ferrari’s design direction for the 1970s.
