Dodge Wayfarer

Dodge introduced the Wayfarer early in 1949 as the replacement for the pre-war Dodge Fast Four, aiming to capture the booming post-war domestic market. Sales lasted through the 1952 model year after which Dodge simply dropped the nameplate in the United States—there was no direct successor on home soil, although export buyers could still opt for the related Kingsway series. Dodge then pivoted marketing focus to the new Meadowbrook line.

The Wayfarer range originally featured a true two-door roadster body with side curtains and minimal weather protection, making it one of only a handful of open-top offerings from the Big Three at the time. Feedback quickly showed drivers wanted more comfort, prompting a mid-cycle shift to the ‘Sportabout’ variant that added proper windows, upgraded trim, and a convertible-like top while retaining the roadster proportions. In total the model line comprised coupes, sedans, and these open variants.

Across all body styles Dodge assembled 217,623 Wayfarers during its four model years. Only 9,325 of those were the sought-after roadster and later Sportabout models—the rest were closed sedans and coupes that carried families rather than weekend drivers.

Though short-lived, the Wayfarer remains notable as the first American-built roadster from a major manufacturer since the 1930s. Its abrupt discontinuation marked a turning point where mainstream buyers turned away from bare-bones open cars in favor of plusher closed models, a trend that would define 1950s automotive tastes.
