Dodge Diplomat

Spanning the 1977–1989 model years, the Dodge Diplomat emerged as Dodge’s mid-price answer to the fading Dodge Dart and eventually replaced the Aspen. For much of its life it was the only rear-wheel-drive sedan in the company’s mainstream catalog.
History
Debuting in fall 1976, the Diplomat was first marketed as a plusher two-door coupe and four-door sedan positioned just above the Dodge Aspen. A station wagon joined for 1978, but by 1980 the coupe was dropped. From 1982 forward the line was rationalized to a single four-door sedan, surviving through 1989 thanks to strong fleet and police sales.
Design and Platform
Built on Chrysler’s rear-wheel-drive M-body platform, the Diplomat sat on a 112.7-inch wheelbase and measured 1885 mm wide, slotting between compact and full-size offerings. Early cars wore traditional stacked-headlamp styling, evolving in 1982 to a more formal roofline and quad rectangular headlamps shared with the concurrent Plymouth Gran Fury and Chrysler Fifth Avenue.
Generations & Variants
First-generation models (1977–1979) came as coupe, sedan or wagon. The second-generation sedan from 1980 onward eliminated the two-door and wagon body styles but offered SE and optional luxury packages borrowed from the Chrysler New Yorker. Police-spec versions, named Diplomat AHB, sold in high numbers from 1979–1989.
Legacy
Although not a strong retail seller, the rear-drive Diplomat endured as one of the last American mid-size sedans with body-on-frame construction and a V8 option, securing it a second life in police fleets and taxi garages well beyond 1989.
