The Dodge Dart debuted for 1959 as a downsized full-size model, taking over for the discontinued Lancer. Positioned below the Coronet, it was initially offered in sedan, hardtop and wagon body styles. Sales surged after the introduction of a true compact platform in 1963, boosted by the slant-six and later small-block V-8 engines, making the Dart a value leader against rivals like the Chevrolet Nova and Ford Falcon.
Design & Reception
Early Darts featured sweeping tailfins and wrap-around glass to echo Dodge’s larger cars. A dramatic shift came in 1963 when a clean, square-cut unit-body platform trimmed weight and interior space. Through the late 1960s and early 1970s, styling became progressively less ornate, adopting twin loop bumpers and Colonnade-style hardtop roofs. The result was a practical yet performance-ready package that appealed to both economy buyers and muscle-car enthusiasts.
Legacy
The Dart bowed out in North America after 1976, succeeded by the Dodge Aspen, yet the nameplate persisted in countries such as Brazil well beyond the original run.
