English version
Between 1955 and 1959 Dodge sold a mid-size sedan called the Lancer, a badge-engineered twin to the Plymouth Belvedere that briefly filled a gap before Dodge consolidated its lineup.
History and market position
Dodge introduced the Lancer for the 1955 model year as its own take on Chrysler’s A-body shell, stationing it above the entry-level Wayfarer but below the full-size Coronet. Sales peaked in 1957 and then fell quickly; after the 1959 run its position was absorbed by the newly re-sized Dodge Dart.
Dimensions and styling
At 4 582 mm long, 1 735 mm wide and 1 346 mm tall, the Lancer rode a 2 819 mm wheelbase shared with its Plymouth twin. Signature touches for Dodge included a louvered grille and twin stainless spears running the length of the flanks.
