Dodge Aspen

The Aspen ran concurrently across the 1976 to 1980 model years with no formal generation break; yearly facelifts and trim adjustments kept it current. For 1976 the range included two- and four-door sedans plus a wagon, essentially carrying the Dart’s rear-drive compact architecture evolved for stricter safety and emissions rules.

Although marketed separately, the Aspen and Plymouth Volaré were badge-engineered twins riding on the same 1973-derived F-body platform. The only major distinctions sat above the beltline—grilles, lighting, and interior trim—while power-train menus, sheetmetal stampings, and mechanical components remained identical across both brands.

The design followed the straight-edged, upright styling language of mid-1970s Chrysler products. Width is listed at 1 849 mm (72.8 in), signaling a slightly broader stance than the Dart it replaced, helping to accommodate new 5-mph bumper mandates and improved shoulder room inside.

With fuel crises biting sales of mid-size and full-size cars, the Aspen briefly kept Dodge competitive in the compact segment. Chronic build-quality issues and early corrosion hurt reputation, hastening Chrysler’s pivot to the front-drive K-platform. The Aspen’s name briefly resurfaced on a 2007 SUV concept, yet the original 1976–1980 model remains an emblem of Detroit’s struggle during the Malaise Era.
