Between 1981 and 1983, Dodge fielded the 400—a mid-size model intended to bridge the gap between the Diplomat and the soon-coming 600 by leveraging Chrysler’s evolutionary “Super K” architecture.
History
Introduced for the 1982 model year, the Dodge 400 slot-ted into the brand’s line-up as a sleeker complement to the already-established K-cars. It replaced the Diplomat in market positioning but, after just two years, was folded into the Dodge 600 range and quietly retired.
Design
Measuring 4602 mm long, 1740 mm wide and 1334 mm tall, the 400 shared its understated three-box silhouette with Chrysler’s contemporary LeBaron, yet rode on the uprated “Super K” chassis that brought tighter body control and a slightly longer wheelbase for improved ride comfort.
Legacy
While brief, the Dodge 600’s direct predecessor provided customers of the recession-hit early 1980s with a more refined front-wheel-drive platform and hinted at the brand’s strategic reliance on efficient K-car derivatives for most of its mid-size offerings for the remainder of the decade.
