Launched in 2014, the Subaru Chiffon quietly replaced the earlier Subaru Lucra as the brand’s ultra-compact kei-car offering, giving city shoppers a rebadged and lightly differentiated version of Daihatsu’s Tanto platform.
Background
Subaru’s kei-car strategy traditionally focused on badge-engineering partner products rather than investing in dedicated models. After the Lucra ended its run, the Chiffon adopted the second-generation Daihatsu Tanto’s tall, upright body shell—complete with sliding rear doors and a space-maximizing interior layout—to maintain Subaru’s presence in Japan’s demanding micro-car segment without operating its own small-car line.
Design & Dimensions
At just 3,395 mm long and 1,475 mm wide, the Chiffon complies strictly with kei-car regulations while delivering extraordinary interior volume. The flat, cube-like silhouette trades aerodynamic polish for headroom and packaging efficiency; doors on both sides open wide, and the bumpers, grille and badges carry subtle Subaru cues to distinguish it from the donor Tanto.
Under the Skin
Mechanically, the Chiffon shares the Tanto’s front-wheel drive architecture, along with the 660 cc three-cylinder engine tuned to Japanese kei-class output limits. Collaborating with Daihatsu allows Subaru to concentrate engineering resources on larger all-wheel-drive models, while still satisfying customers who need a nimble, tax-friendly city runabout.
