The Daihatsu Naked took the practical kei-car formula and wrapped it in utilitarian bodywork that looked ready for a gravel track rather than Tokyo traffic. Produced from 1999 to 2003, it foreshadowed the trend for crossover-styled city cars years before rivals coined the term.
Concept & Launch
Daihatsu first teased the Naked at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, rolling out a near-production version two years later. The car hit dealerships in 1999 as a bold attempt to make a 3.4-metre kei car look like it belonged on a military base.
Design Cues
Ribbed door panels, exposed hinges and chunky bolts gave the Naked a deliberate rough-and-ready aesthetic, while the upright silhouette helped mask the mandatory small footprint of a kei car. Inside, ridges and smooth plastic inserts echoed the early-1980s Fiat Panda dashboard, and the rear seat unbolted in minutes to create a flat load bay.
Mechanicals & Variants
Under the flat hood sat either a naturally aspirated or turbocharged 658 cc three-cylinder petrol engine offered with front- or full-time four-wheel-drive. At just 890 kg, the Naked turned modest outputs—and kei-car tax breaks—into surprisingly brisk urban performance.
Market Legacy
Although replaced by the softer-looking Daihatsu Cast in later years, the Naked pioneered off-roader styling cues on urban hatchbacks long before Rover’s Streetwise, Citroën’s C3 XTR and Volkswagen’s CrossPolo copied the playbook.
