Sold between 1989 and 2000, the Daihatsu Applause was a compact car aimed primarily at British and Australian drivers. Its hallmark was a deceptive 5-door liftback layout that looked like a traditional notchback sedan yet opened like a hatch.
History
The Applause replaced the rear-wheel-drive Daihatsu Charmant and, when Japanese production wrapped after eleven years, the front-wheel-drive Altis took over its role. Export focus on the UK and Australia reflects Daihatsu’s strategy of occupying the affordable compact slot in right-hand-drive markets.
Design
To casual eyes the Applause appears to be a conservative four-door sedan, but the entire rear panel—including the fixed window and rear lamps—lifts up as a single tailgate. This arrangement created a class-leading 412-litre boot in a 4,260 mm overall length while preserving the formal roofline typical of traditional saloons.
Dimensions & Weight
Measuring 4,260 mm long, 1,660 mm wide and just 1,375 mm tall, the Applause sat low and narrow for city manoeuvrability. Its aluminium-intensive construction kept mass to a modest 970 kg, aiding both fuel economy and chassis response.
