History
Chrysler's rear-wheel-drive LX platform provided the bones for this reborn Charger, which landed in showrooms for the 2006 model year as a direct replacement for the front-drive Dodge Intrepid. Initial styling cues—from the scalloped doors to the bold crosshair grille—were drawn from the classic 1968–70 Coupe, yet the design team stretched the wheelbase 120 in and added four full-size doors to satisfy family-sedan buyers hungry for rear-drive performance.
Generations
The first cycle, often called Gen 6 (2006–2010), launched with V6 efficiency leaders and thunderous 5.7-liter and 6.1-liter HEMI V8 options. A major facelift for 2011 ushered in Gen 7: sharper LED lighting, an 8-speed automatic on many trims, and eventual supercharged 6.2-liter Hellcat variants delivering over 700 horsepower. The lineup expanded to include base SE, volume SXT, sporty R/T, and full-fat SRT and Hellcat tiers, with either rear- or optional all-wheel drive.
Design & Legacy
From its concealed B-pillars to the fastback roofline, the Charger LX preserves coupe-like proportions while housing five adults comfortably. Its long production run—now nearing two decades—has seeded countless special editions (Daytona, Scat Pack, Widebody) and burnished Dodge’s reputation as America’s last mainstream purveyor of large V8 sedans.
