Between 1971 and 1973 the Buick Centurion served as Buick’s sporty full-size option, slotting neatly between the LeSabre and Electra while carrying the torch passed by the Wildcat.
History
Introduced in 1971 and produced only through 1973, the Centurion replaced the Wildcat and occupied the same performance-oriented niche within Buick’s full-size family. It disappeared for 1974, leaving that role to be filled largely by the expanded LeSabre range.
Design & Positioning
Critically, the Centurion swapped Buick’s traditional tri-shield for a side-profile centurion crest, underscoring the model’s athletic image. Externally, the 2 025 mm width and 1 380 mm roofline emphasized low, wide proportions that visually distanced it from the more formal Electra.
Legacy
Although a brief three-year run, the Centurion delivered many of the visual cues—bold colors, unique badging, and wide-track styling—that would later characterize Buick’s high-trim LeSabres. Its name was recycled from a 1956 Buick concept, preserving a link with the marque’s mid-century show-car heritage.
