Last Buick to carry the torch for traditional full-size American sedans, the Lucerne took over from the long-running LeSabre in 2005 and held the premium 201 until the sleeker LaCrosse replaced it after 2011.
History
General Motors introduced the Buick Lucerne in late 2005 as a 2006 model, slotting it above the LaCrosse to become Buick’s flagship sedan. Built on GM’s G-platform, it directly succeeded the LeSabre and Park Avenue lines. Production ended with the 2011 model year, after which the second-generation LaCrosse assumed both roles.
Design
Measuring 5.16 m long and 1.87 m wide, the Lucerne preserved the classic three-box silhouette expected of Buick sedans. Distinctive waterfall grille, porthole vents on CXS models, and wide-spaced taillights echoed earlier Buicks while meeting mid-2000s crash standards. Interior materials advanced beyond the LeSabre with available Nuance leather and real wood trim.
Model Years & Badges
Offered in CX, CXL and top-spec CXS trims, with the CXS adding Magnetic Ride Control and the 4.6-liter Northstar V8 from 2006–2009. Engine choices also included a 3.8-liter V6 carried over from the LeSabre and, from 2008, a 3.9-liter V6 paired with a six-speed automatic.
