Wolseley 4/44

Launched in 1952 and built until 1956, the Wolseley 4/44 marked British Motor Corporation’s first post-war compact saloon under the newly-formed BMC umbrella.
Development & launch
Although conceived under the Nuffield Organization, the 4/44 reached buyers after the 1952 merger that created British Motor Corporation. It debuted alongside the closely-related MG Magnette ZA, sharing much of its unibody structure and running gear.
Design & engineering
The car rode on a 4267 mm-long steel shell with modest 1100 kg mass. Under the bonnet lay BMC’s 1.3-litre overhead-valve engine, good for a claimed 117 km/h top speed—spirited for a family saloon of the period. Separate front suspension and rear live axle provided conventional but dependable road manners.
Production span & legacy
Manufactured from 1953 to 1956, the 4/44 bridged the gap between the older Wolseley 4/50 and the more powerful Wolseley 15/50 that followed. Around 17,000 examples left the Cowley works before production ceased, making the model an early but short-lived example of BMC badge-engineering strategy.
