Built from 1959 to 1967 by British Motor Corporation, the Austin-Healey 3000 is the most celebrated of the "big Healey" roadsters, famed for combining race proven hardware with open-top touring comfort.
Heritage & timeline
Unveiled as the replacement for the Austin-Healey 100-6, the 3000 kept BMC’s heavy-metal sports line alive at the height of 1960s motoring optimism. Assembled at the MG Works in Abingdon, it left the factory floor when regulations tightened and the MG MGB became the company’s volume sports car, making the 3000 the last of the large Austin-Healey roadsters.
Design & bodywork
Steel body shells, 4001 mm long and 1537 mm wide, were hand-formed by Jensen Motors before shipment to BMC. A low 1270 mm roofline and long bonnet gave the car its muscular stance, while wind-up windows and a proper folding top moved it slightly toward grand-tourer practicality without diluting its sporting silhouette.
Production & legacy
After 1967 no direct successor emerged; instead, the MG MGB took over showroom space and the big Healeys stepped onto the collector stage. Light at 1102 kg and with mechanical durability born from rally campaigns, surviving 3000s now dominate vintage rallies from Goodwood to Colorado.
