Launched in 1948, the Wolseley 4/50 marked the return of Wolseley Motors Ltd. after the Second World War—a compact saloon directly descended from the Morris Oxford MO and aimed at Britain’s upper-mid market. It opened a new chapter for the British Motor Corporation by pairing mainstream underpinnings with Wolseley’s traditional up-market finish.
Early roots and launch
The 4/50 and its six-cylinder sibling, the 6/80, entered production in 1948 as Wolseley’s first post-war line. Sharing floor-pan and running gear with the Morris Oxford MO, they were distinguished by a longer, sleeker bonnet, chromed radiator grille with illuminated Wolseley badge, and plusher interiors trimmed in walnut and leather.
Powertrain and performance
A downsized 1 476 cc four-cylinder SOHC engine produced 50 hp and 75 lb-ft of torque—essentially the 6/80’s straight-six block minus two cylinders. Power reached the rear wheels via a four-speed manual gearbox with synchromesh on the top three ratios, enabling a 0–50 mph time in the low 20-second bracket and near-80 mph top speed, competitive for its class in the late 1940s.
Model timeline
The 4/50 remained on the Wolseley price list until 1952, when it gave way to the lighter, monocoque Wolseley 4/44. Fewer than 14 000 units were produced, making survivors rare today and sought after by enthusiasts of British transitional-era saloons.
