Slotting between the A35 and the later ADO16, the Austin A40 Farina (1958-1959) brought Pinin Farina design credentials to BMC’s bread-and-butter small-car range in Britain.
History
The A40 Farina appeared just as BMC was rationalising its small-car platforms. Saloon models reached showrooms in 1958, followed a year later by the A40 Countryman estate, giving BMC a modern family car to outshine the outgoing A35. It was quickly succeeded by the even more space-efficient ADO16 line.
Design
Styled at Carrozzeria Pinin Farina’s Turin studios, the two-box body was a deliberate break from the upright three-box look then common in Britain. By carrying the Farina suffix, Austin publicly credited Pinin Farina—an Italian name rarely attached to everyday British saloons of the era—signalling a new emphasis on European flair and practicality.
Legacy
Though short-lived, the Farina helped bridge BMC’s design gap: it trained British buyers to expect smoother European lines while proving that an Italian studio could make Britain’s small car both desirable and practical, lessons later applied to the ADO16.
