Revealed at the 1951 Earls Court Motor Show as the “New Austin Seven,” the Austin A30 became Austin’s answer to the Morris Minor and served as BMC’s compact family offering from mid-1952 until late 1956.
History
Debuting shortly after Britain’s post-war economic recovery, the A30 effectively replaced the venerable Austin 7 and was produced for just over four years before giving way to the revised Austin A35. Throughout its short life it squared off directly with the Morris Minor, positioning Austin as a strong contender in the rapidly growing small-car market of the 1950s.
Design & Dimensions
Measuring just 3.47 m long and a mere 1.38 m wide, the A30 was compact even by contemporary standards. Its lightweight 686 kg construction and upright proportions reflected the engineering priorities of fuel efficiency and urban practicality rather than outright speed.
