BMW Z4 (G29)

BMW’s third-generation Z4 arrived in 2018 with the internal code G29, a fabric-roof successor to the hardtop E89 that aimed to blend classic roadster proportions with brand-new modular tech. It remains the current Z4 seven years on, serving as both daily sporty runabout and the basis for the Toyota GR Suppa project.
Design
Long-hood, short-deck sports-car proportions carry over from earlier Z cars, but the G29 adds wider fenders, upturned L-shaped LED headlights, and a soft-top that stows in 10 seconds at up to 50 km/h. 4321 mm long, 1861 mm wide, and only 1304 mm tall, it sits visibly lower and wider than the E89 it replaced.
Engineering
Built on BMW’s modular CLAR platform shared with the contemporary 3-Series, the G29 offers everything from a four-cylinder 20i to the turbo-six M40i. Aluminum intensive suspension, electric power steering, and an updated seven-inch digital cockpit round out the technical palette.
Generations & Positioning
The G29 is the third distinct generation of BMW Z line roadsters after the E85/86 (2002–2008) and E89 (2009–2016). Produced alongside Toyota’s GR Supra at Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, it remains the lone two-seat Z model as of 2024 with no direct successor announced.
